Being a hero, the man had observed, is largely a matter of knowing one’s cues.

Lev Grossman
About This Quote

In the movie "Memento," the protagonist, who is a man with short-term memory loss, is constantly having to remind himself who his wife, his son and the guy he's been hired to kill are. He can't remember them by looking at them for a minute or two. Instead, he has to memorize their faces and be certain that their facial expressions and body language mean what he thinks they do. So when he's in a situation where he's supposed to be killing someone, for example, he has to know how long it takes him to get there and what exactly he'll say when he arrives.
